Biodesix was founded in 2006 and aspired to accelerate and streamline diagnostic processes in complex disease states.

In 2020 Biodesix partnered with Bio-Rad to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, they introduced a highly sensitive rapid turn-around PCR test that detects the presence of COVID-19 in patient samples. During this period, they realized shipping with staple carriers like FedEx or UPS wasn’t going to work for them.

We found that shipping through these carriers would take a whole extra day and add a day to our turnaround on our testing time. So we started looking at couriers.

Switching to Couriers

Unfortunately, their initial courier was not providing quality service. Packages were being mishandled/damaged. Proper procedures weren’t always followed, which led to an unprofessional experience. It was time for a change.

The Beginning

BlackBox Meats is an e-commerce platform that allows meat companies in any market to add their inventory to the BlackBox platform.This platform began in Las Vegas with a partnership with Freedom Meats, a premium meat company whose inventory is utilized by some of the most renowned restaurants and hotels in Las Vegas.

At the time, Freedom meats still did not have an efficient way to offer their premium cuts of meat directly to consumers until they were introduced to BlackBox. The challenge Freedom Meats faced was similar to what many customers face — how can we ensure our product (meats) is delivered in a timely manner?  It was at this point that the BlackBox Meats partnership with Dropoff came to fruition.

With a same-day delivery company they could trust, BlackBox Meats was ready to launch in Las Vegas. That launch was expedited by the number one news story of 2020: COVID-19.

When asked about ensuring the freshness of each delivery, BlackBox Meats operations specialist Terry Makasziw praised the partnership, had this to say: 

“That’s where Dropoff came in, as our partner courier service. It’s critically important that the courier we were going to choose would make sure that the fragile quality of our meat was going to remain in the same prime condition from the time it leaves our building to the time it’s delivered to a customer.” 

The Partnership

COVID-19’s impact expanded to many businesses including BlackBox Meats, who experienced product (meat) shortages as a result of increased demand. This demand was much larger than anticipated. 

The mutual commitment to success by both BlackBox Meats and Dropoff allowed the partnership to flourish.  As Stacey Coxon, an operations manager for BlackBox Meats says, 

“Dropoff was willing to work with us to basically help in any way they could… we were backlogged by about a week and Dropoff truly was 24/7 in helping us get our product to all these people who now were depending on it.” 

Following the initial success of the first launch, BlackBox was able to retain customers from the launch while adding others. In addition, BlackBox Meats launched in Phoenix, Irvine, and Seattle and has plans for additional markets.

The Beginning

Tomlinson’s Feed, a successful local business operated by members of the Click family spanning four generations, is based upon a clear objective: “Do what’s best for our guests and their pets.”

In alignment with this mission to offer the best possible experience to their customers— who increasingly desired more flexibility and convenience — they began looking for an effective way to offer local delivery of their products.

They initially considered undertaking this endeavor by themselves, but quickly realized that successful same-day logistics demands investment in more than just a fleet of delivery vans: It requires powerful software, professional drivers, multi-layered customer support management and a seasoned dispatch team to get things where they need to be in the most efficient way possible.

As a result, in December 2018, Tomlinson’s Feed and Dropoff joined forces.

The Partnership

Tomlinson’s Feed quickly followed with the launch of a brand-new website in January 2019 that allowed their customers for the first time to order products by delivery.

What began without much fanfare with only 16 deliveries placed that month would soon become an extremely popular offering that proved to be a catalyst for skyrocketing business.

That March, Tomlinson’s Feed completed an integration with Dropoff’s API, connecting their new website to our platform and thus allowing their customers to place orders for delivery which are then directly and immediately processed by our operations team.

This integration ended manually-scheduled deliveries by Tomlinson’s Feed employees, which gave them the free capacity to actively drive up utilization of the local delivery option.

Tomlinson’s Feed was able to find a potent competitive advantage by providing free local same-day delivery for all orders above $75, with free delivery as a perk for all automatic-renewal “auto-ship” orders.

This offering in particular has transformed their business, with 45% of all online orders now classified as auto-ship subscriptions. Their resulting order volume ballooned: Tomlinson’s Feed reached almost 500 deliveries in August and more than twice that in subsequent months, leading to a surge in revenue.

The idea of opening A Bar N Ranch, a local boutique Wagyu cattle company in Dallas was sparked after founders, Gregg Allen and Van Nichols discovered the land they bought in Sherman, Texas was a high-functioning cattle ranch. They decided they wanted to pick up the trade of raising cattle and deliver it to the Texas market, but they weren’t sure which type of cattle.

After trying Wagyu beef and learning the benefits for the first time, they were determined to produce it using their own twist. Gregg and Van crossed a Japanese cattle breed of Wagyu bulls and American Black Angus cows to produce densely marbled beef. They continuously worked on enhancing the genetics and feeding programs to achieve optimum marbling, tenderness, and flavor. They also pride themselves on the health benefits Wagyu beef provides consumers. It contains a higher percentage of monounsaturated fats, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and lower cholesterol.

The time and commitment A Bar N Ranch invests into raising and delivering Wagyu beef in Texas says a lot about the quality. It took seven years to raise the cattle on their 6,000-acre ranch.

It also requires strategic planning to deliver their beef to 50 restaurant locations in Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and Houston.   

In the beginning, the three-person A Bar N Ranch team took turns making deliveries, which they found wasn’t a good use of their time. They needed to focus on on-site operations. Finding a delivery service became a priority to A Bar N Ranch, especially as business maintained its growth.

The search for the best courier service commenced. Katie Bolner, a marketing and meat sales associate at A Bar N Ranch said she was looking for a service who could handle perishable items and deliver them to each location within a sensitive time frame.

Another challenge was finding a delivery service who could keep up with their demand. A Bar N Ranch needs their goods delivered on their restaurant clients’ particular schedules. A confection-filled journey began when Kei Okumura, founder of Sugarbird Sweets, traveled to Paris to study the art of making pastries at École Supérieure de Cuisine Française. After graduating, she stayed in Paris to continue her education at top Michelin restaurants before returning to her hometown of Los Angeles.

Once home, Kei continued her baking quest and set out to perfect delectable scones filled with exotic spices and seasonal fruits. She combined her existing organic teas, which she sold at local farmers’ markets, with her scone recipes and launched Sugarbird Sweets. As business started picking up, Kei found her products were selling out quickly with more orders coming in week-by-week. In her peak of growth, she started taking on catering orders.

Children around the world often learn to ride a bike at a young age. woombikes USA caters to children from 18 months to 14 years old, and has designed the optimal bike for them to get comfortable riding on. They spent six years crafting the ideal bike for kids, using parts sourced from around the world. The bikes come in various sizes for different age groups and are 50% lighter than a conventional children’s bike and help kids learn to ride up to 30% faster than on conventional bikes.

Woombikes is a family-owned and operated business that was started by Christian Bezdeka and Marcus Ihlenfeld in Vienna, Austria. Four years ago, Marcus’ brother Mathias opened up a showroom and distribution center in Austin, TX to manage all of their North America sales and operations.

They also work with Helping Hand Home in Austin, a non-profit that provides a safe haven for children healing from abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Woombikes donates bikes and helmets to children who are transitioning to a new home.
